Anna’s House offers services based on the natural order of development within the central
nervous system. The initial assessment is designed to reveal the overall function of the central
nervous system (motor movements and balance at different levels of brain function and eye
movements), and includes an auditory processing evaluation. Academic status and nutritional
concerns are also considered. In other words, the assessment is a process of evaluating the
overall functioning of a child’s central nervous system. Once the point of breakdown is
determined, an individualized program is created with the purpose of stimulating maturity within
the central nervous system.
Our work with children, Neuro-Developmental Delay therapy, begins at the foundation level—the
brain stem—and stimulates normal developmental growth. The workings of the brain stem begin
prior to birth and include involuntary movements, reactionary and emotional responses, control
of breathing, stimulation of the senses—things that should fully develop before the abilities to
control balance, cross midline, use logic and reason, and apply right-left brain integration. As a
result, we generally observe natural maturity in body movements and cognitive function.
Children who come to Anna’s House manifest various levels of difficulty in more than one system
of the body, which might affect vision, speech, auditory processing, balance, gross and/or fine
motor movements, sensory, emotions, the presence of primitive reflexes (involuntary movements
from before birth up through about age one), processing speed, working memory, behavior and
academics. Difficulties are not necessarily found in every system of the body, but perhaps in a
small way, three or more systems including the presence of primitive reflexes. When a child
developmentally ready, we stimulate bilateral integration.
Anna’s House also offers a sound therapy program that is based on the normal development of
listening. A typical program is 60 hours in length, divided into two parts. During the first 30
hours, a child listens to Mozart music and Gregorian Chant using a patented machine designed to
stimulate listening as it is initially heard in the womb. By the time the child completes the first
30 hours, he or she should hear the music as a newborn hears sound in all its fullness. The second
half of the listening occurs after a four to six week break and introduces speech in a
developmental process. Individualized programs are created according to each child’s needs,
whether it be one or more of the following: clearly distinguishing sounds within words and
syllables, applying sound to reading and spelling, following multiple directions, tuning out
background sound so that ambient sounds are less distracting, speech, etc.
Nutrition is considered, as many children suffer from allergies, asthma, food sensitivities, yeast
overgrowth, insufficient absorption of nutrients, etc. Just as delay in development of the
central nervous system might contribute to breakdown at the brain stem level, it may also affect
a delay in the development of the digestive and/or immune system. Many children benefit from
mild to more stringent diet protocol; and other children benefit from the use of classical
homeopathy (the use of natural sources that stimulate the central nervous system and enable the
body to strengthen itself).
One-on-one academic assistance is provided for children as needed or requested. Periodic
classes are offered to parents and teachers on numerous topics such as: Neuro-Developmental
Delay, nutrition, how to teach reading based on normal developmental growth and how to teach
writing based on normal developmental growth.
